“Corn Chopping Time” 8 x 10 Oil on canvas 2011

My painting entitled “Corn Chopping Time” has been juried into the Bryan Memorial Gallery upcoming themed exhibit called “Things That Move.” The exhibit will run February 3 – April 1, 2012.

With this painting, I tried to capture the warm golden ochre colors of the early autumn corn fields in Vermont. There were two tractors in the field, one red, one green, as well as a wagon and a loader which is behind the green tractor, with just the tip of the chute showing. I watched for quiet a while as the tractors moved back and forth in the field, and realized how quickly the corn was disappearing, reducing the field to stubble.

I took many photos and used those and my first impressions to bring back to work on this in my studio. As much as I prefer working completely en plein air, this was one situation where I felt I could not paint quickly enough to capture what I wanted in the scene as the corn chopping was happening very quickly.
